The Takoma Park Police Department arrived to investigate the meet-up at the intersection of New Hampshire and Ethan Allen Avenues around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10 and saw several vehicles doing burnouts, donuts, and other dangerous maneuvers surrounded by a large crowd.
The crowd subsequently surrounded the patrol vehicles and began hitting their hoods and bumpers, as well as taunting the police.
Officers then activated their emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to disperse the crowd, but it “only seemed to exacerbate the situation,” according to police.
Meanwhile, some members of the crowd were wearing ballistic plate carriers — one even had a handgun tucked into his waistband and disappeared into the crowd, officers said.
Montgomery County and Prince George’s County Police were called to assist due to public safety concerns, prompting the crowd and reckless drivers to disperse, many heading southbound on New Hampshire Avenue toward DC.
“These reckless meet-ups violate several of Maryland’s transportation laws and are illegal,” said Takoma Park Police. “They are dangerous and jeopardize the safety and tranquility of our community. We are working with our allied partners in law enforcement to address this serious issue through education, enforcement, and changes to legislation.”
